MALIGNANT OPTIC GLIOMA OF CHILDHOOD

Year 2001, Volume: 54 Issue: 3, 251 - 254, 30.09.2001

Abstract

Optic glioma is known as a tumor of childhood. However, malignant glial tumors of the anterior visual fi›athway are rarely encountered in children, but in the elderly. The tumor presents with visual deterioration. Malignancy may occur |arimariIy, or a preexisting low-grade glioma may become malignant following factors such as radiation ther-

A 6-year-old girl presented with visual deteriora- tion for about two months. Radiological evalua- tion revealed an intra, para and sufiirasellar lesion. The patient was operated on through a right fiiteri- ona/ craniotomy and a subtotal tumor resection performed. The histo[:iathoIogic diagnosis was malignant glioma of the ofiitic chiasma.

Although considered to be a pathology of adults, malign optic glioma may occur in childhood. Presentation may occur with visual deterioration or endocrinological abnormality. Thera[:ieutic intervention is similar to that of the management combination for a malignant glial tumor of the cerebral cortex and optic glioma.

Abstract

O|otik glioma genellikle çocukluk çağı t”ümörü o/ma‹ina rağmen anterior vizual yolun ma/ign glial tümörleri az rastlanan bir fiıatolojidir ve genel- likle ileri yaşlarda ortaya çikarlar. Görmede bozul- mayla kendini gösterir. Malignensi primer olarak onaya çıkabilir veya d'üş’ük grade'Ii gliomada rady- oterapi gibi bazi faktörleri takiben malign tümöre dön’üsebilir.
6 yaşında kız çocuğu 2 aylık görme bozukluğu şikayetiyle başvurdu. Hastanın radyolojik değerlendirmesinde se/lar, parase//ar ve suprasel- lar lezyon tes|oit edildi. Hasta sağ pterional kran- iotomiyle opere edildi. Subtotal t'ümör rezeksiy- onu yafiııldı. Histopatolojik tanı optik kiazmanın malign gliomu olarak geldi. Bu patoloji ileri yaş/arda seyrekde olsa gör”üIebiIir, fakat çocukluk çapında oldukça nadirdir. Hastalık görme bozuk- luğu veya endokrinolojik anormalliklerle kendini gösterir.
