Short Bowel Syndrome

Abstract

The short bowel syndrome (SBS) can be seen after resection of large portions of the small intestine. Steatorrhea, azotorrhea, massive asidic diarrhea and malnutrition are the characteristics of this syndrome. In the University of Ankara, School of Medicine, Department of General Surgery, 12 patients under emergent conditions, massive small intestinal resections were applied between 1982-1987. In the postoperative period, total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was applied in 7 patients. 2 of these patients were followed for 3 mounts and other 2 patients were followed for one year.
