Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation of Postoperative Thoracotomy Pain

Abstract

In this study, we used transcutaneous electrical stimulaetion for relief of postoperative thoracotomy pain in 20 patients. In these patients, pain, anxiety, pulse rate, blood pressure and respiration rates are recorded at postoperative 30., 60. and 120. minutes. In arteriel blood samples, pO:, pPCO: and pH values were measured. There were no significant difference in postoperative complications, incisional sensitivity, pulse rates and anxiety. In the TES group, pH values were increased and pCO, values Were decreased significantly after transcutaneous electrical stimulation. İn the control group, blood pressures were significantly decreased after administration narcotics. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation is highiy effective, inexpensive and.reliable method for relieving pain in thoracotomy patients.
