Whipple Disease

Abstract

This disease was first described by George Hoyt Whipple in a patient who came from Türkiye (14). Whipple observed excessive fat accumulation in the small intestine autopsy samples and defined this condition as a new disease called "Intestinal Lipodystrophy". Later on, it was understood that the disease was not only located in the small intestines and was not due to a disorder in fat metabolism (11). Therefore, it would be more appropriate to abandon names such as intestinal lipodystrophy and use only the term Whipple's disease.

Whipple Hastalığı

Abstract

Bu hastalığı ilk defa Türkiye'den gelen bir hastada George Hoyt Whipple tamamlamıştır (14). İnce barsak otopsi örneklerinde aşırı. yağ birikimi olduğunu gözleyen Whipple bu durumu «İntestinal Lipodistrofi» adıyla yeni bir hastalık olarak tanımlamıştır. Daha sonraları hastalığın ne sadece ince barsaklarda oturduğu ve ne de yağ metabolizması bozukluğuna bağlı olmadığı anlaşılmıştır (11). Dolayısıyla, intestinal lipodistrofi gibi isimlerin terkedilerek sadece Whipple hastalığı teriminin kullanılması daha yerinde olacaktır.
