Resuscitation of Newborn Babies
Abstract
Approximately 5 out of every 1000 babies born alive die of respiratory failure in the first few days of life. The majority of these deaths are from RDS. This is the cause of death for 50% of premature babies whose mouthparts are 1000-1500 grams, and this rate was found to be 5% for those whose weight is 2000-2500. Since the syndrome occurs within a few hours of birth, it is believed to occur in utero. Although its etiology is not known for sure, it is considered to be closely related to a defect in the production of surfactant, which lines the alveolar walls. Resuscitation of Newborn Babies
