Kısa Yarı Ömürlü Radyoizotoplar Beyin Sintigrafisi

Abstract

In recent years, at various leading medical centers around the world, the diagnosis of different types of intracranial space-occupying lesions and vascular diseases has been successfully performed using the method of brain scintigraphy, aided by radioisotopes and advanced nuclear medical devices. This diagnostic method enables detection without causing any physical harm to the patients. The development of such a method has been significantly influenced by advances both in nuclear medical instrumentation and in radiopharmaceutical compounds. Today, brain scintigraphy is considered one of the most reliable methods for identifying intracranial pathologies. Radiopharmaceuticals used in brain scintigraphy generally include protein-bound radioactive compounds, intracellular radioactive substances, and extracellular radioactive ions (1). Among these, the most successfully used radioisotope compounds include radioiodinated human serum albumin (¹³¹I-HSA), radioactive mercury preparations (¹⁹⁷Hg and ²⁰³Hg Chlormerodrin), radioactive technetium pertechnetate (⁹⁹ᵐTc-Pertechnetate), and radioactive indium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid chelate (¹¹³ᵐIn-DTPA chelate) (Figure 1). In particular, ⁹⁹ᵐTc-Pertechnetate and ¹¹³ᵐIn-DTPA chelate have recently gained considerable importance and are now routinely used in this field due to their very short physical and biological half-lives. This article outlines the preparation methods for these two radiopharmaceuticals, ⁹⁹ᵐTc-Pertechnetate and ¹¹³ᵐIn-DTPA chelate, used in brain scintigraphy studies conducted at the Institute of Radiobiology, Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. The properties of both compounds are discussed, and the results obtained from their respective applications in brain scintigraphy are compared and analyzed.
