Families' Responses to Children's Deadly Illness

Abstract

This article discusses parents' feelings and reactions to their child's terminal illness. Each parent responds uniquely to their child's terminal illness, reflecting their personality, past experiences, and the surrounding environment at the time. Parents' adaptation to the illness consists of periods of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. A sense of hope is also experienced throughout these periods. Without hope, parents cannot cope with the painful reality. Just as they did during the illness, they adapt to death through various stages. Two to three weeks after the death, they tend to feel blame and search for their own mistakes. The death of a child can cause various psychological disorders in parents and siblings. Furthermore, different patterns of interaction can occur between family members. In some families, members become closer to each other, while in others, the family gradually disintegrates. Therefore, discussions with the doctor during this time can help them verbalize their anxieties and feelings of guilt. Hearing from the doctor that everything that can be done for their child is a significant support. In conclusion, it's clear that the doctor's role doesn't end with the child's death. Surviving family members need the doctor's support.
