Abstract

The records of 69 patients with proved pancreatic carcinoma encountered at the Gastroenterology Department of Faculty of Medicine, University of Ankara from 1963 through 1973 were analyzed. The diagnosis was established at operation in all of the patients. Of the 69 such patients, 52 were men and 17 were women. The mean age of the patients in the series was 55 years (range 33 - 82). The maximum incidence was in the sixth and seventh decade. The location of the disease in the gland demonstrated at the operation were 82 % in the head and 18 % in the body - cauda. Three major symptoms were weight loss, abdominal pain and jaundice. The initial symptoms were abdominal pain and jaundice for the carcinoma of the head of pancreas; abdominal pain and weight loss for the carcinoma body - cauda of the pancreas. All of the symptoms that were first to appear had existed for a median of 14 weeks in the patients with the carcinoma of the head of the pancreas and for a median of 28 weeks in the patients with the carcinoma of the body - cauda of the pancreas before the final diagnosis was established. The laparotomy was performed in all the patients, but none of these have had a chance for the radical surgery. Eleven patients had only laparotomy and 58 patients underwent biliary drainage procedures for palliation.
