Diagnosis of Pericarditis with Effusion by Radioactive Heart Blood Pool Scintigraphy

Abstract

This paper presents an evaluation of cases with pericardial effusion among 200 heart scintigraphies performed at Ankara University Medical Faculty Nuclear Medicine Center between 1968 and 1974. Due to the limitations of radiological imaging in distinguishing fluid accumulation from cardiac enlargement, radioactive heart blood pool scintigraphy was found to have significant diagnostic value. The technique provided crucial information in differentiating between cardiac dilation and pericardial effusion, and was shown to be safe, easily repeatable, and patient-friendly.
