An Acute Nocardia Asteroides Meningo-Encephalitis and Its Characteristics

Abstract

In a case of acute meningoencephalitis following a pyococcal tonsillopharyngitis and squeezing of a purulent focus in the throat, Nocardia asteroides was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid. The disease began as meningoencephalitis, progressed to encephalitis, and despite apparent clinical improvement under systemic sulfonamide therapy, the patient succumbed to an acute brain hemorrhage likely caused by microabscesses. This case presents a rare etiology and pathogenetic course, and its distinctive features are emphasized.

Akut Bir Nocardia Asteroides Menengo-Ensefaliti Ve Özellikleri

Abstract

Piyokoksik bir tonsillofarenjiti izleyen ve boğazdaki cerahatli odağın sıkılmasını takiben oluşan akut bir menengoensefalit vakasında BOS’dan Nocardia asteroides izole edilmiştir. Hastalık bir menengoensefalit olarak başlamış, ensefalite yönelmiş ve sistemik sülfonamid tedavisi altında klinik aşikâr bir düzelme gösterirken beyinde oluşan mikro apselere bağlı olduğu kuvvetle muhtemel akut bir beyin kanaması ile kaybedilmiştir. Hastalık ender rastlanan bir etyoloji ve patojenetik gidiş gösteren bir vakadır. Bu bakımdan özellikleriyle belirtmek istenmiştir.
