Retroperitoneal Lipom
Abstract
This article discusses retroperitoneal lipomas, a rare tumor entity compared to subcutaneous lipomas, through literature review and presentation of a surgically treated case. Four key characteristics are outlined: rapid growth, high recurrence potential, malignant transformation (into liposarcoma or mixed sarcomas), and lack of distant metastasis. The article compares anatomical and pathological features with lipomas in other regions, explaining challenges in complete excision due to peritoneal folds and proximity to major vessels and nerves. Several histogenetic hypotheses are reviewed, including mesenchymal cell residue theory. The case describes a 45-year-old male farmer with progressive abdominal distension and a large non-painful mass. Surgical removal yielded an 11.5 kg lipoma confirmed as benign by histopathology.
