Abstract

Abstract

In today's conditions, environmental pollution is one of the leading issues concerning public health. In addition to being a criterion in water pollution, the accumulation of contaminants in the food chain and their detrimental effects on human health prompted us to investigate mercury residues in aquatic products. In 156 samples of fish caught from the Black Sea and one of its major rivers, we detected mercury residues in various concentrations with a 44% prevalence using the Thin Layer Chromatography method.

In fish caught in Sakarya, contamination was observed in 60% of the samples, and in 13% of these contaminated fish, the mercury residue level was above 1.2 mg/kg. In fish caught from the Black Sea, such as Grey mullet, Horse mackerel, Swordfish, and Red mullet, contamination was detected in 37% of the samples, and in 12.7% of the contaminated fish, the mercury residue exceeded 1.2 mg/kg.

A significant statistical difference was found between contamination levels in freshwater and seawater fish (P < 0.001) when analyzed with the X2 test.
