Türkiye'de Malarya Savaşı

Abstract

Following the First World War, malaria outbreaks intensified across Türkiye, especially in regions with suitable climates, prompting the Turkish Republic to initiate an organized campaign in 1924 under Dr. Refik Saydam. The national plan included targeted regional strategies, eradication of both parasites and vector mosquitoes, and training of specialized personnel via the establishment of a malaria institute and associated hospital. From 1925 onward, the program expanded steadily to include 54 provinces, 301 districts, and over 12,500 villages, affecting nearly 9.6 million people. By 1948, malaria control operated in 41 zones with mobile hospitals, staff training programs, and detailed population mapping. Treatment protocols shifted over the years, ranging from modified Nocht regimen to shorter courses due to wartime medicine shortages, with Atebrin, quinine, and later Plasmoquine used widely. Preventive approaches—especially chemical prophylaxis and vector control—relied on agents like DDT, mazut, and pyrethrum, combined with habitat drainage. Despite wartime setbacks, renewed efforts after 1945 led to substantial reductions in spleen enlargement rates and infection prevalence.
