İki Marcus Gunn Vak'ası

Abstract

Marcus Gunn phenomenon, a rare ocular condition first described in 1883, involves involuntary upper eyelid elevation during jaw movements. Though predominantly congenital and unilateral, associated neuromuscular interactions remain under debate. This paper presents two cases: a 20-year-old man with right ptosis and optic nerve atrophy post-infection, and a 10-month-old infant whose eyelid lifts during sucking. Both exhibited classic features where jaw opening or side movement triggered eyelid elevation. The authors review embryological and neurological theories regarding aberrant connections between motor branches of the trigeminal nerve and the oculomotor nerve. Although precise anatomical confirmation is lacking, reflex arcs involving mandibular sensory/motor fibers and eyelid elevators are hypothesized. Historical literature from Villard, Spaeth, Groff, and others are cited to explore pathophysiology and rare variations where the phenomenon appears with jaw closure or other facial actions.
