Abstract
This paper presents clinical outcomes from the use of balanced skeletal traction combined with early mobilization in complex fracture cases. Compound or comminuted long bone fractures and injuries accompanied by multiple traumas often pose challenges where neither open nor closed reduction is ideal. Skeletal traction, though simple and often overlooked in favor of modern surgical fixation, proves effective in preserving function and minimizing complications. Advantages include better control of open wounds, rapid pain relief, improved circulation, and reliable reduction of angulation and rotation deformities. Seven case studies demonstrate successful recovery in patients with severe limb trauma using Steinmann pin traction methods, followed by rehabilitation. Complications were minimal, mostly involving transient skin or soft tissue issues, and limb length discrepancies remained within acceptable limits. The author advocates revisiting skeletal traction as a viable method especially when surgery poses higher risks.
