An Alternarian Infection in Man

Abstract

Alternaria is a fungus that produces disease in plants and is present in the air abondantly. It may play a part in causing allergic diseases such as asthma and hay fever in man. İt very rarely produces disease in the human skin; since 1930 only four cases in which the skin was affected by Alternaria have been reported in the literature. In this case the disease clinically resembled cutaneous tuberculosis in some areas and Favus in other areas. We identified the effecting agent as Alternaria in these lesions culturally and serologically. We also are reporting here a rare case in which Alternaria caused disease of the skin, scalp and finger nails and toenails in a boy aged 11 years.

Abstract

Alternaria, bitkilerde hastalık yapan ve havada bol miktarda bulunan mantarlardandır. Bunlar insanların astım ve saman nezlesi gibi allerjik hastalıklarında rol oynarlar. Bizzat insan derisinde hastalık yaptıkları hemen görülmez gibidir; nitekim 1930 dan beri dünya literatüründe deride hastalık yapmış ancak 4 vak'a neşredildiğini görüyoruz. Klinik olarak lokalize olduğu bazı yerlerde Favus, bazı yerlerde deri tüberkülozu intibaı veren bir hastadaki lezyonlarda etgenin Alternaria olduğu histolojik, kültürel ve serolojik bulgularla tesbit edilerek Alternaria'nın insan deri, saçlı deri ve tırnaklarında hastalık yapabileceği bir vak'a münasibetiyle bir defa daha gösterilmiş bulunuyor.
