Tuberculous Meningitis and the Role of Corticosteroids in Its Treatment

Abstract

Between 1955 and 1967, 256 cases of tuberculosis meningitis from different age groups were admitted to the Infectious Diseases Clinic for investigation and treatment. The incidence of the disease by age, its course and prognosis in relation to age and disease history, complications, and sequelae were discussed in detail and presented in graphical form. The patients were analyzed in two groups: one treated with only anti-tuberculosis drugs, and the other with the addition of corticosteroids to the treatment. As a result, it was concluded that cases in which steroids were combined with anti-tuberculosis drugs yielded more satisfactory and recommendable results.

Abstract

1955-1967 yılları arasında İnfeksiyon Hastalıkları Kliniği'nde, farklı yaş gruplarındaki 256 tüberküloz menenjiti vakası yatırılarak tetkik ve tedavi edilmiştir. Hastalığın yaş insidansı, yaş ve hastalık geçmişi ile ilişkili olarak hastalığın seyri, prognozu, komplikasyonlar ve sekelleri detaylı bir şekilde ele alınmış ve grafikler halinde sunulmuştur. Hastalar, sadece tüberkülostatiklerle tedavi edilen ve bunlara kortikosteroidlerin eklenerek tedavi edilen iki grup halinde incelenmiş ve sonuç olarak, steroidlerin antitüberküloz ilaçlarla kombin edildiği vakalar grubunda daha memnuniyet verici ve tavsiye edilmeye değer sonuçlar elde edilmiştir.
