Determination of Blood Alcohol Content from Respiratory Air

Abstract

This study reviews the methods for determining blood alcohol concentration (BAC) using exhaled breath, examining the physiological and chemical principles underlying these techniques. Measurement systems based on alveolar and expiratory air are discussed, including tube-based systems such as Draeger, Kitagawa, and Alcomille, as well as instruments like Alcometer, Breathalyzer, Drunkometer, and Intoximeter. The study presents established correlations between alcohol levels in the blood and breath, alongside the performance of these devices in forensic and clinical practice. Experimental results from various countries, including Germany, France, and the USA, highlight the practical reliability and legal significance of breath alcohol testing, especially in traffic control and forensic investigations.

Abstract

Bu çalışmada, solunum havasından faydalanarak kandaki alkol miktarının tayini yöntemleri, bu yöntemlerin fizyolojik ve kimyasal dayanakları ile birlikte incelenmiştir. Alveol havası ve soluk havası temelli ölçüm teknikleri ele alınarak; Draeger, Kitagawa, Alcomille gibi tüp sistemleri ile Alcometer, Breathalyzer, Drunkometer ve Intoximeter gibi cihazların çalışma prensipleri, doğruluk oranları ve pratik uygulamaları değerlendirilmiştir. Farklı oranlarla kandaki alkolle solunum havasındaki alkol arasında saptanan korelasyonlara ve cihazların uygulandığı klinik ve adli tecrübelerle elde edilen sonuçlara yer verilmiştir. Solunumla alkol tayininin trafik güvenliği ve adli tıp uygulamalarındaki önemi vurgulanmış, özellikle Almanya, Fransa ve ABD gibi ülkelerdeki yaygın kullanımı örneklenmiştir.
