The Problem of Synergism and Antagonism in Antibiotic Combinations

Abstract

Three kinds of antibacterial interaction can be distinguished
among the antibiotic and chemotherapeutic agents: antagonism,
synergism and indifference. Although this interaction exerts some
peculiarities it has been possible to lay some rules in predicting the
kind of interaction between two antibiotic agents on the hasis of in
vitro studies, In evaluating antibiotic combinations, the decision
should be made according to the results of the in vivo studies rather
than those of in vitro studies. If the former types of data are not
available it may then be of benefit to abide by the rules established
on the basis of the in vitro studies.

Abstract

Antibiyotik ve kemoterapötik ajanlar arasında üç tür antibakteriyel etkileşim ayırt edilebilir: antagonizm, sinerjizm ve kayıtsızlık. Bu etkileşimin bazı özellikleri olmasına rağmen, in vitro çalışmalar temelinde iki antibiyotik ajan arasındaki etkileşimin türünü tahmin etmede bazı kurallar koymak mümkün olmuştur. Antibiyotik kombinasyonlarını değerlendirirken, karar in vitro çalışmaların sonuçlarından ziyade in vivo çalışmaların sonuçlarına göre verilmelidir. İlk tür veriler mevcut değilse, in vitro çalışmalar temelinde belirlenen kurallara uymak faydalı olabilir.
