Plastics and Health Problems Appeared with Their Use Plastic materials are widely used in daily life — from food packaging, kitchenware, furniture, and toys to medical applications like artificial vessels and surgical tools. Their structure comprises polymers with various additives (plasticizers, stabilizers, pigments), some of which may pose health risks. Hazards include incomplete polymerization leading to toxic monomer residues, thermal degradation emitting toxic gases (e.g., from nylon or polyurethane), and direct tissue reactions causing inflammation. Additives such as ortho-cresyl phosphate, aromatic phosphates, and heavy metal dyes are linked to neurotoxicity, cancer risk, and systemic effects. Foreign countries have instituted strict standards to regulate polymer types and additive contents in food-related plastics. In Türkiye, lack of standardization and poor public awareness allow unsafe plastic production practices. The study calls for regulatory frameworks to safeguard public health against plastic-related risks.
