The Effect of Pituitrin Upon Portal Pressure and Hemorrhage of Esophageal Varices This clinical study examines the use of pituitrin, a posterior pituitary extract, in managing bleeding from esophageal varices by its potential to reduce portal hypertension. Five patients with various conditions underwent intravenous administration of 20 units of pituitrin, and portal pressure was measured via intraoperative catheterization. In two cases, portal pressure decreased significantly; in one case it remained unchanged; and in two cases it increased slightly. Parallel use of ephedrine resulted in both systemic and portal pressure elevation. The variability in response is attributed to biological activity differences and potential histamine content in pituitary extracts derived from animals. Despite risks of hypotension, pituitrin shows promise in emergency control of variceal bleeding and may act synergistically with Sengstaken-Blakemore tube application.
