Renal Pelvic Atony and the Psoas Border Sign

Abstract

This study examines the pathophysiological significance of the psoas border sign, supported by clinical observations. In the literature, Hutter described this sign as an indicator of hypotony or hypomotility of the renal pelvis, while Kiil considered it a marker of marked pelvic dilatation. However, the author argues that the psoas border sign is not always due to these two conditions; it can also occur in patients with a single functioning kidney—particularly those with an extrarenal-type pelvis—where increased diuresis leads to expansion. Intravenous pyelography findings from eight supporting cases are presented.

Böbrek Pelvisi Atonisi ve Psoas Kenarı Semptomu

Abstract

Bu çalışma, psoas kenarı semptomunun patofizyolojik anlamını irdelemekte ve klinik gözlemlerle desteklemektedir. Literatürde Hutter, bu semptomu böbrek pelvisinde hipotoni veya hipomobilitenin göstergesi olarak tanımlarken; Kiil, ileri derecede pelvik genişleme belirtisi olarak değerlendirmiştir. Ancak yazar, psoas kenarı semptomunun her zaman bu iki duruma bağlı olmadığını, tek böbrekle çalışan ve özellikle ekstrarenal tip pelvise sahip hastalarda artmış diürez sonucu gelişen ekspansiyon hallerinde de ortaya çıkabileceğini belirtmektedir. Çalışmada, bu görüşü destekleyen sekiz olguya ait intravenöz pyelografi bulguları sunulmuştur.
