The Relationship Between Hyperglycemia and Electrolyte Imbalance in Infants with Acute Gastroenteritis.

Year 1970, Volume: 23 Issue: 4, 1005 - 1014, 31.08.1970

Abstract

Since hyperglycemia has been frequently observed in children with hypernatremic dehydration due to diarrhes, 57 infants with acute gastroenteritis were studied in order to detect any correlation between admission levels of glucose and pH, Na, K, C02. Glucose was 165.9 - 71.9 (71.0 - 400.0), Na was 147.4 - 14.1 mnq/L (116.0- 175.0), K was 5.5 1.5 mnq/L (3.1 - 10.0), pH was 7.248
0.16 (6.99 7.56), C02 was 16.5 9.8 mnq/L (3.2 59.2).
Admission glucose levels were above 150 mgr % in 25 cases (45.6 C/o) and 200 mgr. % or more in (28.1 1%). There was no hypoglicemia in any case.
37 % of the cases whose glucose levels were above 150 mgr % had sodium levels above 150 rnEq/L and 39 % below 150 mEq/L.
No positive correlation was found between admission levels of glucose and pH, Na, K, C02.
It is suggested that, one should consider the frequency of this possibility before making the definite diagnosis of diabetes mellitus in these children in order to prevent them from wrong treatment.

Akut Gastroenteritli Süt Çocuklarında Hipergliseminin Elektrolit Denge Bozukluğu ile İlişkisi

Year 1970, Volume: 23 Issue: 4, 1005 - 1014, 31.08.1970

Abstract

Hiperglisemi, ishal nedeniyle hipernatremik dehidratasyonlu çocuklarda sıklıkla görüldüğünden, akut gastroenteritli 57 bebek, glikoz ve pH, Na, K, C02'nin kabul seviyeleri arasında herhangi bir korelasyon olup olmadığını tespit etmek amacıyla incelendi. Glikoz 165,9 - 71,9 (71,0 - 400,0), Na 147,4 - 14,1 mnq/L (116,0 - 175,0), K 5,5 1,5 mnq/L (3,1 - 10,0), pH 7,248
0,16 (6,99 7,56), C02 16,5 9,8 mnq/L (3,2 59,2) idi.
