Abstract

This study presents a prosthetic approach for patients with poliomyelitis and cerebral palsy sequelae. Using methyl methacrylate, bite plates were designed to cover half of the clinical crowns and incorporate an anterior extension angled at 45–55 degrees to accommodate tools such as pencils or straws. Applied in nine patients, including six with poliomyelitis and three with cerebral palsy, the devices were well tolerated and used for extended periods. The plates facilitated functional independence, allowing tasks like typing and liquid intake without assistance. No significant increase in dental caries was observed during clinical follow-up.

Application of Acrylic Bite Plates to Patients with Poliomyelitis Sequelae

Abstract

Bu çalışmada poliomyelitis ve cerebral palsy sekeli olan hastalar için akrilikten yapılmış bir diş öklüzyon plâğı geliştirildi. Methyl methacrylate materyalinden tek parça olarak üretilen plâk, dişlerin klinik kronlarının yarısını örterken, ön kısmına eklenen yaklaşık 45–55° meyilli uzantı ile kalem, kamış gibi nesnelerin tutulmasını sağladı. Toplam dokuz hastaya uygulanan bu yöntemde plâk, uzun süre rahatsızlık vermeden kullanılabilmiş, yazma ve sıvı tüketimi gibi aktiviteleri hastaların yardımsız gerçekleştirmelerine olanak tanımıştır. Klinik takipte dental çürüklerde kayda değer artış gözlenmemiştir.
