Diabetes mellitus is one of disorders of carbohydrate metabolism, according to several authors, present at the time of conception of the individual. in fact, there are several lines of evidence indicating that the heredity plays an important role in the genesis of the disease. These are given as familial aggregation, monozygotic twin concordance, pedigree patterns and animal models. The associated syndro mes, population studies and different pathological investigations also support this view of hereditary basis.
Despite these observations and some but limited experiments, the mode of transmission has not been yet established and it seems impossible at the present stage of our knowledge to decide which of the different kinds of transmission is involved. This, of course, is due to difficulties of ascertainement and that the basic defect, whether central or peripheral, macroscopic or microscopic, molecular or enzymatic, is almost completely unknown.
