Post-Transfusional Reactions

Year 1964, Volume: 17 Issue: 2, 193 - 201, 30.06.1964

Abstract

The aim of this study is to show the percentage of reactions which occurred after blood transfusion at many hospitals in Istanbul. Although many works had been done in this subject, this is a first attempt to publish our results. Usually we have attached a reaction card to each bottle of blood which we have distributed to hospitals. Few hospitals have sent them back to the blood transfusion centre, with recording the post-transfusional reactions. During the first period (34 months), we distributed 42591 pints of blood to several hospitals.

We have received only 9951 (23.3 %) cards and, 6849 of them were empty, only 3102 (7.2 %) cards were filled by clinicians. Most of the reactions are simple febrile and allergic reactions. The majority of transfusion reactions in these cases may be defined as a rise in body temperature following transfusions, which is not accompanied by increased blood destruction. Febrile reactions may be due to the presence of pyrogens in the bottle or apparatus, imperfectly cleaned rubber tubing is a common cause. Also the speed of blood which was given, has been able to do such reactions.

Only we found 1 % icterus and haemoglobinuria but, none hospitals informed for any incompatibility. The results of post-transfusional reactions are shown at the table: 2 in the text.

Post-Transfüzyonel Reaksiyonlar

Year 1964, Volume: 17 Issue: 2, 193 - 201, 30.06.1964
