Abstract

This study examines the clinical characteristics, epidemiological distribution, and prevalence of “hepatitis epidemica” (infectious hepatitis) in Turkey. A historical literature review was conducted to compare catarrhal jaundice, homologous serum jaundice, and epidemic hepatitis, focusing on differences in etiology, pathogenesis, and transmission routes. Case statistics from 1937–1949 across various regions of Turkey (Ankara, Izmir, Erzurum) are presented, highlighting seasonal increases in cases, particularly during autumn and winter in military units and school populations. The relationship between liver function test results and clinical progression is discussed, concluding that epidemic hepatitis is of viral origin and primarily transmitted via the fecal–oral route.

Hepatitis Epidemica

Abstract

Bu çalışma, “hepatitis epidemica” olarak bilinen enfeksiyöz hepatitin klinik özellikleri, epidemiyolojik dağılımı ve Türkiye’deki görülme sıklığını incelemektedir. Tarihsel literatür taraması ile kataral ikter, homolog serum sarılığı ve epidemik hepatit arasındaki farklar değerlendirilmiş; hastalıkların etiyoloji, patogenez ve bulaş yolları karşılaştırılmıştır. Türkiye’nin farklı bölgelerinden (Ankara, İzmir, Erzurum) elde edilen 1937–1949 yılları arasındaki vaka istatistikleri sunulmuş, özellikle askerî birlikler ve okul topluluklarında sonbahar–kış aylarında vaka artışları gözlenmiştir. Karaciğer fonksiyon testleri ile klinik seyir arasındaki ilişki tartışılmış, epidemik hepatitlerin viral etyolojiye sahip olduğu ve bulaşın ağırlıklı olarak oral–fekal yolla gerçekleştiği sonucuna varılmıştır.
