The Impact Of Migration-Themed Visual Content On Turkish Language Education: The Relationship Between Language Skills and Values Education

Abstract

This study examines the interaction between language skills and values education in Turkish language teaching using the short film ‘Migrants’. It emphasises that visual materials on the theme of migration, particularly those using silent narration, are a powerful tool for developing students' linguistic and emotional skills. The film has significant pedagogical potential for teaching universal values such as migration, empathy, solidarity, and tolerance. The study presents an approach to teaching the multi-layered nature of migration through visual metaphors, character relationships, and symbolic narration. The findings show that audiovisual content is an effective tool in overcoming educational barriers, particularly language barriers and identity issues faced by migrant students. The research shows that the film ‘Migrants’ can be evaluated not only as a teaching material but also as a teaching tool that develops cultural sensitivity and social justice. It emphasises that educators should integrate these materials into their lessons. This study demonstrates the power of audiovisual materials in the context of Turkish language education and how these materials can be integrated with values education. It offers opportunities for educators to use migration-themed content in their lessons to raise awareness about multicultural life and develop language skills. Future research can assess the impact and applicability of these materials. Furthermore, it is important to integrate such materials for students of different ages and levels. Future studies can analyse the impact of film-based teaching in greater detail. Including migration-themed content in Turkish teaching programmes can increase students' social awareness.
