Ares and Iyarri

Abstract

This study questions the possible identity between Ares and Iyarri, on the theonymic and cultic level. That Ares is etymologically derived from Iyarri would rest on fragile linguistic bases without being absolutely impossible (disappearance of the yod from the reduced form Yarri without leaving a trace and early phenomenon of itacism). On the functional level, six similarities between the two divinities can be noted. Finally, the cultic imprint of Ares in Anatolia, placed at the head of several local pantheons, accredits the hypothesis.
