Journey to the End of the World: Psychoanalytic Reading of The End Of F..ing World

Abstract

The End of F…ing World is a British TV Show which consists of 8 episodes. It is about two psychopathological adolescents who run away from home and their subsequent adventures. Increased incidence of acting out and shift of symptoms to borderline organization during this period necessitate further examination of adolescent psychopathology. After Freud, changes in cultural structure, differing clinical manifestations and perceiving adolescence as an inherently problematic period have led to a profound increase in the number of psychoanalytic studies regarding adolescent psychopathology. The fact that adolescence is not a linear developmental period requires investigation of mental organization and object relations in addition to the developmental context of the changes during this period. Psychoanalytic Theory, which links adolescence with archaic history as well as hormonal and identity development, provides the depth we need to understand adolescent psychopathology. Thus, the aims of this article were performing a psychoanalytic analysis of the show with the help of psychoanalytic terminology which focuses on the early mother-baby relationship and emphasizes the impact of the pre-oedipal period on adolescent conflicts and psychopathology.

Dünyanın Sonuna Yolculuk: The End Of F..ing World Dizisinin Psikanalitik Okuması

Abstract

The End of F…ing World, psikopatolojik özellikler gösteren iki ergen karakterin, evden kaçmaları ve sonrasında yaşadıklarının anlatıldığı bir dizidir. Günümüz ergenliğinde artan eyleme vurmalar, ergen patolojilerinin sınır örgütlenmeye kayması gibi gelişmeler, ergenliği ve ergenin psikopatolojisini anlamada bizi daha derine bakmaya zorlamaktadır. Freud sonrasında, kültürdeki değişimler, klinik görüntülerin değişimi ve gün geçtikçe ergenliğin kendi başına bir sorunsal olarak öneminin artması psikanalitik kuramda ergenlik üzerine yapılan çalışmaların büyük ölçüde artmasına neden olmuştur. Ergenliğin doğrusal ilerleyen bir gelişim dönemi olmaması ergenliği karmaşık bir dönem haline getirmektedir. Ergenliğin bu karmaşık yapısı, gelişimsel bir bakış açısına ek olarak erken dönem nesne ilişkilerine odaklanan psikanalitik bir bakışı zorunlu kılmaktadır. Ergenliği, hormonal ve kimliksel gelişimin yanında, kişinin arkaik tarihi ile ilişkilendiren psikanalitik kuram, ergen psikopatolojilerini anlamada ihtiyacımız olan derinliği sağlamaktadır. Bu yazının amacı, başta erken dönem anne-bebek ilişkilerine odaklanan psikanalitik terminoloji yardımı ile dizinin psikanalitik bir okumasını yapmak, preödipal dönemin ve nesne ilişkilerinin ergenlik dönemi çatışmalarına ve psikopatolojilerine etkisini vurgulamaktır.
