Abstract

Two young people bring uncertainty to a village in which everything is in a systematic progress. The citizens of Pleasantville, who had previously never suspected the possibility of different situations, evaluations, behaviors, and choices, react to this situation differently. The movie, Pleasantville, demonstrates the individuals’ relations with uncertainty as parallel with the findings of the literature on uncertainty. The first reactions generally appear as a surprise. Later, responses follow two separate processes. These processes are defined as curiosity sourced and anxiety sourced processes. Curiosity sourced process are represented in the movie as parallel to the literature which assumes the association between uncertainty and exploration. On the other hand, the anxiety sourced processes were represented as similar with the theories in which uncertainty is defined with such processes as rigidity in attitudes, group identification, and setting up rules. The movie analysis, which demonstrates similarities with the psychology literature, can be helpful to both daily life practices and researchers studying human behavior.

Hoş Bir Kasabanın Şiddete Varan Öyküsü: Pleasentville'de Belirsizliği Yönet(eme)mek
