Assessment of the movie “The Experiment” in the context of the movie reflecting ethical violations conducted in psychology

Abstract

Cinema as a visual culture, has gained the attention in every part of the society (Sönmez & Bilge, 2014).
From the past to the present cinema has been actively involved in psychology; however mental health
experts have often been portrayed in films negatively (Cannon, 2008)The concept of ethics is defined as
a set of principles that provide guidance in determining which actions are right when a person encounters
any challenges (Behnke, 2001). In “The Experiment (2010)” movie ethical rules that protect the rights
and safety of research participants are mostly vanished. The movie reveals the adverse effects of not
complying the ethical rules and, this, in turn, makes it a very valuable film. Since “Das Experiment” movie
was released in 2001, several analyzes have been done on the psychological aspects of the film. However,
for “The Experiment” movie which was released in 2010 have not been assessed in detail. The movie is
loosely based on the “Stanford Prison Experiment” conducted by Philip Zimbardo in 1971. Paul Scheuring
wrote the screenplay for the movie and is touted as a psychological thriller. Ethical violations in the movie
are discussed through TPA, APA and EFPA’s ethics code. In the movie, violation of ethics rules involves
avoiding harm, not exploiting research participants for their own benefits, lack of trustworthy, lack of
respect for people’s rights and dignity. Furthermore, violations of getting informed consent from research
participants, getting permission for the records, offering appropriate inducements and avoiding deception in
research are discussed

Psikolojide Yapılan Etik İhlallerin Sinemada Yansıtılması Bağlamında “Deney” Filminin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Sinema toplumun her parçasını etkileyen görsel ve kültürel bir alandır (Sönmez ve Bilge, 2014). Geçmişten günümüze kadar sinema ve psikoloji iç içe yer almıştır, fakat filmlerde ruh sağlığı alanındaki uzmanların uygulamaları çoğu zaman etik açıdan olumsuz aktarılmaktadır. (Cannon, 2008). Etik, bir kişinin herhangi bir olayla karşılaştığı sırada nasıl davranması gerektiğini bildiren ve doğru davranışın ne olduğunu anlatan genel bir kavram olarak tanımlanabilir (Behnke, 2001). Araştırma katılımcılarının haklarını ve güvenliğini koruyan birçok etik kuralın ihlal edildiğini ve bunun da nelere mâl olabileceğini açık biçimde gösteren “Deney” (The Experiment, 2010) filminin de, bu açıdan değerli bir film olduğu düşünülmektedir. “ Deney” (Das Experiment) filmi ilk olarak 2001 tarihinde yayınlanmıştır ve bunun üzerine psikolojik yönden birçok analiz yapılmıştır. Fakat 2010 tarih inde yayınlanan “Deney” filmi üzerine detaylı değerlendirmeye rastlanmamıştır. Film, Paul Scheuring tarafından yazılıp yönetilen psikolojik gerilim denemesi ve 1971 yılında Philip Zimbardo tarafından yapılan “Stanford Hapishane Deneyinin” uyarlamasıdır. Film içinde yer alan etik ihlaller, TPD (2004), APA (2002) ve EFPA Etik Yönetmeliği’ne (2005) göre tartışılmıştır. Film içerisinde ihlal edilen etik kurallar  arasında zarar vermekten kaçınmak, kendi yararları doğrultusunda araştırma katılımcılarını sömürmemek, doğru bilgilendirme sorumluluğu, insan haklarına saygı ve ayrımcılık yapmamak vardır. Ayrıca, araştırmacılardan yeterince bilgilendirilmiş onam almak, kayıtlar için izin almak, araştırma katılımcılarını uygun bir şekilde teşvik etmek ve araştırmalarda yanıltmalardan kaçınma kurallarının ihlal edildiği tartışılmıştır
