Evaluating Alzheimer’s Disease in the Frame of Cognitive Processes and Clinical Aspects: A Critical Review of Şahsiyet TV Mini-Series

Abstract

Şahsiyet (Saylak, 2018) is a 12-episode TV mini-series about the changing life of Agâh
Beyoğlu, who lives in Beyoğlu-Istanbul. After receiving a an Alzheimer's disease
diagnosis, Agâh Beyoğlu decides to become a serial killer. In the first part of the present
article, general characteristics of the series and main story were introduced. In the
second part, the main character’s cognitive disruptions due to Alzheimer's disease were
evaluated. In this regard, Agâh Beyoğlu’s memory disruptions and changes in his
personality were discussed in relation to cognitive psychology and neurology
disciplines. In the third part, the main character’s life and his disease-related
experiences were examined from a clinical perspective. In this respect, his
interpersonal relationships were closely investigated in the frame of existential
psychology. Moreover, his defense mechanisms against Alzheimer's disease were
discussed. In summary, we presented how an individual experiences deteriorations in
cognitive processes which is caused by Alzheimer's disease. We also argue about his
interpersonal conflicts and existential anxieties that may arise after receiving this
diagnosis.

Alzheimer Hastalığına Bilişsel Süreçler ve Klinik Çerçeveden Bakış: Şahsiyet Dizisinin Kritik İncelemesi

Abstract

Şahsiyet (Saylak, 2018), İstanbul Beyoğlu’nda yaşayan Agâh Beyoğlu’nun değişen
yaşamını anlatan 12 bölümlük bir kısa dizidir. Alzheimer hastalığı tanısı aldıktan sonra
Agâh Beyoğlu seri cinayetler işlemeye başlar. Bu makalenin ilk bölümünde, dizinin ana
karakterleri ve hikâye örüntüsü genel hatlarıyla özetlenmiştir. Çalışmanın ikinci
bölümünde ise dizinin ana karakteri ekseninde Alzheimer hastalığında gözlemlenen
bilişsel süreçlerdeki bozulmalar aktarılmaktadır. Bu kapsamda bellek süreçleri ve
kişilikte ortaya çıkan değişimler, bilişsel psikoloji ve nöroloji disiplinlerinin bulguları
ışığında tartışılmaktadır. Makalenin üçüncü bölümünde, ana karakterin yaşamı ve
hastalığıyla olan ilişkisi klinik çerçeveden ele alınmıştır. Bu bağlamda, Agâh Bey’in
kişilerarası ilişkileri varoluşçu psikoloji çerçevesinden incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, Agâh
Bey’in Alzheimer hastalığı tanısını aldıktan sonra geliştirebileceği düşünülen savunma
mekanizmaları ele alınmıştır. Özetle, bu çalışmada kişinin Alzheimer hastalığı tanısı
almasıyla bilişsel süreçlerindeki bozulmaları nasıl deneyimleyebileceği sunulmuştur.
Ayrıca, Alzheimer hastalığı tanısı aldıktan sonra, Agâh Bey’in yaşayabileceği olası
varoluşsal kaygılar ve kişilerarası çatışmalar tartışılmıştır.
