On the Museumization of Cultural Assets

Year 2023, Volume: 4 Issue: 2, 224 - 241, 31.07.2023

Abstract

Many cultural assets are functionalized to mobilise the selected or desired histories within themselves in the service of agenda. The private and official administrations that are responsible for the preservation of the historical structures, also intend to to create public service from these out-of-use buildings by means of museumization. In this context, the historical buildings are used in the name of commodifying the culture for touristical aims, and manipulated to justify the fictionalisation of the past as well. Thus, these sort of populist conversions responding to the agendas and expectations of political powers aims at presenting both touristic and political incomes. Today, museumization still seem to provide the convenience of telling any historical theme that is desired to be told at a historical place. But, the inconvenient historical buildings for museum use may not always meet the expected results after these conversions. Because every museumizated cultural asset cannot easily assume and adopt this new function. Even, some conversions defined as “reluctant museums” may also cause political polemics because of the unconvenient exhibitions organized within them. Here, designers are also under the pressure of spoiling the aura of the historical spaces during the museumization processes with their interventions. This article deals with the museamization of cultural assets, the problem of contextlessness, the life of museumization, the spatial organization, and exhibition approaches.

Kültür Varlıklarının Müzeleştirilmesi Üzerine

Year 2023, Volume: 4 Issue: 2, 224 - 241, 31.07.2023
