General Reviw Of Mysticism And Sufi Orders In Bosnia

Abstract

We comprehend from the documents that Islam was brought to Bosnia around xxth century by route of mysticism, a path created and first traveled by the Sufis. And we also witness to the fact that before the Ottomans came, Sufis had settled and built dervish lodges (tekija) in Bosnia. Large portions of the native population would accept Islam willingly during and in the years that followed the conquest of Bosnia by Ottomans. But the local population had already accepted Islam by the efforts of Sufis. It is theorized that the local Bosnian people converted to Islam in far greater numbers than some of their Catholic and Orthodox neighbors because the local Bosnian Christian Church, the Bogumil sect, bore many striking similarities to Islam. However, this alone would not be reason enough to accept a different religion. It was also necessary that significant missionary work be done to reach out to locals and expose them to the new faith. The Dervish lodges, which also established to serve this need, would conduct missionary work in Bosnia and with time proved to be a very effective tool in spreading knowledge of Islam, helping to gain new adherents. Among these Dervish lodges (tekija), Nakshbandi, Mawlawi, Kadiri, Bektashi Orders are highly visible. From the time Ottoman conquered Bosnia, many additional dervish lodges had been established. These lodges played an important role in bringing up well known scholars in addition to establishing sufi art (as buildings) and tradition.
