The Kadiri Culture in Bosnia
Abstract
The Qadiri order, an Islamic Sufi sect or tariqa, arrived Bosnia with the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia in 1463 and spread the Balkan region thereafter. The first Qadiri tekke, a monastic complex where Sufis live, in Bosnia is The Hadji Sinan Tekke that was built in Sarajevo, which was and still is the intellectual center of Bosnia and one of the centers within the Balkans, in 1768. The Hadji Sinan Tekke is one of the few tekkes in the Balkan region that survived until today. Throughout the years, The Hadji Sinan Tekke served as the Qadiri center in Bosnia and the Balkans. Well-known Qadiri sheikhs, poets and scholars are usually the ones who studied and served in Sarajevo. Even though there were Qadiri tekkes in Travnik, Jajce and Zvornik, these tekkes has been under the influence of The Hadji Sinan Tekke. Therefore, these tekkes are not known as much. Another reason The Qadiri order is not spread into cities other than Sarajevo could be that sheikhs of the tekkes in other cities were not well-known.
