Abstract

The Balkans were the most important, but also the most problematic part of the Ottoman Empire. The region was conquest before the Constantinople and remain under the Ottoman rule until 19’nth century. Regarging the fact that in the Middle Ages, the main element of identification was the religious one, the researchers say that the Ottomans used to solve the problem by installing the “system of millets”. In the context of this system, all religious miniorities used to live their beliefs and traditions in an atmosphere of tolerance and freedom.

The Albanians, which are one of the oldest nations of Balkans also used to stay under the Ottoman rule for nearly five centuries. Albanians gave great contribution to the Ottoman state especially in the military and administrative areas. Despite the other Balkan nations which belonged to one religion, the Albanians were separated in Orthodox Christians, Catholics and Muslims. İn the system of millets were the religion was the main element of difference, it is very important to analyse the impact of this system in the formation and the preservation of Albanian identity. Thus, in this article we will try to find an answer to this question.
