Akdeniz Koşullarında Zoysia spp. Türlerinin Genel Çim Performansı ve Morfolojik Özelliklerinin Belirlenmesi

Year 2016, Volume: 45 Issue: (Özel Sayı 1) 7. Ulusal Bahçe Bitkileri Kongresi, 977 - 983, 31.03.2016

Abstract

Zoysia japonica Steud.

Evaluation of Zoysia spp. for Turfgrass Performance and Morphological Characteristics Under Mediterranean Environment of Turkey

Year 2016, Volume: 45 Issue: (Özel Sayı 1) 7. Ulusal Bahçe Bitkileri Kongresi, 977 - 983, 31.03.2016

Abstract

Zoysia japonica Steud. (Japanese lawngrass), Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr. (Manilagrass) and Zoysia pacifica (Gaud.) Hotta & Kuroti (formerly Z.tenuifolia-Mascarenegrass) are the best known and most commonly used warm season turfgrass species of the genus ‘Zoysia\Zoysiagrasses, originated from Eastern Asia, have excellent shade tolerance. They are important grasses that might be offered as an alternative turfgrass species to bermudagrass for use especially in shaded lawns, golf courses, soccer fields and other green spaces under warm climatic regions of Turkey. Although zoysia species has a big potential for the Mediterranean, they are barely known as turfgrasses in the region. Studies regarding performance of zoysia species especially Z.matrella and Z.pacifica are scanty. The objective of this study was to determine establishment rate, turfgrass performance and morphological characteristics of zoysia species under Mediterranean climatic conditions of Turkey. Establishment rate data was taken from the zoysia plots established by using rooted turf plugs (plugging methods) in 2014. The data on turfgrass performance, leaf and stolon characteristics were taken from the plots established in 2012. Results showed that Z.pacifica had the finest leaf texture and provided the highest turfgrass quality and tiller density. Z.japonica which had coarser texture, and taller canopy height compared to other zoysia species was found to be the fastest establishing species.
