Abstract

Examination of the Emotional Well-Being of a Mother Who Experienced Preterm Birth According to the Deck Chair Theory: A Case Report

Abstract

Aim:
The Deck Chair Theory, developed by Jean Ball in 1987, identifies that postpartum well-being is influenced by three main factors: the mother’s personality, support from family and social environment, and professional support from healthcare providers. This case report was prepared to examine the emotional well-being of a mother who gave birth prematurely and whose newborn was diagnosed with a teratoma, based on the Deck Chair Theory.
Method:
This case report was designed to qualitatively evaluate the postpartum experiences of a mother who gave birth prematurely and whose newborn was diagnosed with a teratoma. Data were collected through observations made during the mother’s early postpartum weeks, nursing notes, and semi-structured interviews conducted with the mother.
Results:
The study revealed that the mother, who had experienced two previous pregnancy losses and gave birth prematurely to a baby diagnosed with a teratoma, initially felt guilt, anxiety, and inadequacy in the early postpartum period. However, continuous support from her spouse and family demonstrated that her social support system was strong. Counseling provided by healthcare professionals on breastfeeding, breast massage, and milk expression training contributed to the mother’s physiological relaxation and helped her assume her maternal role. During her hospital stay, her motivation was enhanced, communication with healthcare staff was strengthened, and her active participation in the care process facilitated the restoration of her emotional balance.
Conclusion:
In addition to the supportive role of healthcare professionals, the Deck Chair Theory highlights the crucial role of family and social support. The support G. received from her spouse and family starting from pregnancy alleviated her emotional burden in the postpartum period. In conclusion, this case report, examined within the framework of the Deck Chair Theory, demonstrates that providing professional care and social support to mothers who experience preterm birth strengthens their emotional adjustment and contributes positively to the postpartum care process.
