The Red Njegoš – Petar II Petrović in Yugoslav and communist ideology and propaganda of Montenegrin communists

Year 2018, Volume: 1 Issue: 1, 115 - 133, 26.12.2018

Abstract

This paper analyzes different levels of use of the
character and the work of a significant Montenegrin poet and ruler Petar II Petrović-Njegoš
for the purpose of promoting the ideas of Montenegrin communists. By analyzing
speeches from public celebrations in honour of Njegoš and by presenting the
sources in the main communist media, this paper tries to present the key in
which the communists interpreted Njegoš and his work. The canonization of
Njegoš as Yugoslav national poet during the communist reign is observed from
the aspect of the significance of that poet for authorities. This paper
searches for narrative constructions and ideologemes that the Communist
intellectuals and politicians constructed to promote their ideas through Njegoš
and his character.
