Acupuncture and acupressure applications in women’s health

Abstract

Objective: Women’s health encompasses diverse healthcare needs arising from hormonal, physiological, and psychosocial changes occurring throughout different stages of life. Among traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) practices, acupuncture and acupressure have increasingly attracted attention as supportive approaches for symptom management in women’s health. This narrative review aimed to evaluate current scientific evidence regarding the applications and effectiveness of acupuncture and acupressure across different stages of women’s health. Methods: This study was conducted as a narrative review. A comprehensive literature search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases to identify studies published in Turkish and English between January 1, 2011, and July 22, 2026. The search strategy included the keywords “acupuncture,” “acupressure,” “women’s health,” “pregnancy,” “infertility,” and “menopause.” A total of 467 publications were identified. After removal of duplicate records, titles, abstracts, and full texts were screened, and 79 studies meeting the inclusion criteria were included in the review. Randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses investigating the use of acupuncture and/or acupressure in women’s health were included, whereas case reports, letters to the editor, conference abstracts, and studies not directly related to women’s health were excluded. Results: The available evidence suggests that acupuncture and acupressure may be beneficial in the management of dysmenorrhea, premenstrual syndrome, endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and menopause. These interventions appear to contribute to pain relief, management of nausea and vomiting, reduction of stress and anxiety, and improvement of quality of life. However, the overall strength of the evidence remains limited because of methodological heterogeneity, relatively small sample sizes, and variations in intervention protocols across studies. Conclusion: Acupuncture and, in particular, acupressure as a non-invasive intervention represent promising traditional and complementary medicine approaches for supporting symptom management in women’s health. Nevertheless, their clinical implementation should be conducted in accordance with current national regulations, and further high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to establish more robust evidence regarding their efficacy and safety.

Kadın sağlığında akupunktur ve akupresür uygulamaları

Abstract

Amaç: Kadın sağlığı, yaşamın farklı evrelerinde ortaya çıkan hormonal, fizyolojik ve psikososyal değişimlere bağlı olarak çok yönlü bakım gereksinimlerini kapsamaktadır. Geleneksel ve tamamlayıcı tıp uygulamaları arasında yer alan akupunktur ve akupresür, son yıllarda kadın sağlığında semptom yönetimini desteklemek amacıyla giderek daha fazla kullanılmaktadır. Bu derlemenin amacı, kadın sağlığının farklı dönemlerinde akupunktur ve akupresür uygulamalarının kullanım alanlarını ve etkinliğine ilişkin güncel bilimsel kanıtları değerlendirmektir. Yöntem: Bu çalışma anlatısal (narrative) derleme olarak hazırlanmıştır. Literatür taraması PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar ve Cochrane Library veri tabanlarında 1 Ocak 2011- 22 Temmuz 2026 tarihleri arasında yayımlanan Türkçe ve İngilizce çalışmalar üzerinde gerçekleştirilmiştir. Taramada "akupunktur (acupuncture), akupresür (acupressure), kadın sağlığı (women’s health), gebelik (pregnancy), infertilite (infertility) ve menopoz (menopause)" anahtar kelimeleri kullanılmıştır. Toplam 467 yayına ulaşılmış, tekrar eden kayıtların çıkarılmasının ardından başlık, özet ve tam metin değerlendirmeleri sonucunda dâhil edilme ölçütlerini karşılayan 79 kaynak derlemeye alınmıştır. Kadın sağlığı kapsamında akupunktur veya akupresür uygulamalarını inceleyen randomize kontrollü çalışmalar, sistematik derlemeler ve meta-analizler değerlendirilirken: olgu sunumları, editöre mektuplar, kongre özetleri ve konu dışı çalışmalar dışlanmıştır. Bulgular: Literatür bulguları, akupunktur ve akupresürün dismenore, premenstrüel sendrom, endometriozis, polikistik over sendromu, infertilite, gebelik, doğum, postpartum dönem ve menopoz süreçlerinde özellikle ağrı yönetimi, bulantı-kusma kontrolü, stres ve anksiyetenin azaltılması ile yaşam kalitesinin desteklenmesinde yararlı olabileceğini göstermektedir. Bununla birlikte, çalışmalar arasındaki metodolojik farklılıklar, örneklem büyüklüklerinin sınırlı olması ve uygulama protokollerindeki heterojenlik nedeniyle mevcut kanıtların kesinliği sınırlıdır. Sonuç: Akupunktur ve özellikle noninvaziv bir uygulama olan akupresür, kadın sağlığında semptom yönetimini destekleyebilecek geleneksel ve tamamlayıcı yaklaşımlar arasında yer almaktadır. Bununla birlikte, bu uygulamaların klinik kullanımı güncel mevzuat doğrultusunda yürütülmeli ve etkinlik ile güvenilirliklerinin daha güçlü biçimde ortaya konulabilmesi için yüksek metodolojik kalitede, geniş örneklemli randomize kontrollü çalışmalara ihtiyaç bulunmaktadır.
