Livadia Embassies and Sefâretnâmes (Ambassadorial Reports)

Abstract

We are unable to consistently determine the exact years in which the Livadia embassies took place. However, we observe that the first embassy we could identify was in 1863, and the others occurred in 1867, 1879, 1886, 1887, 1891, 1898, 1900, 1903, 1911, and 1914. Despite this frequency, claiming that the Livadia embassies were organized every year would be an overstatement. Such an assertion would necessitate both the Russian Tsars consistently visiting Crimea annually and the Ottoman State sending an embassy delegation each time.
In this article, we will first attempt to elucidate the matter by identifying the common characteristics of the sefâretnâmes (ambassadorial reports) presented to the Sultan by the Ottoman ambassadors upon their return to Istanbul from Livadia. Subsequently, we will provide the texts and facsimiles of the five sefâretnâmes in our possession, and include the photographs related to Livadia found within the sefâretnâme from 1886.

Livadya Sefâretleri ve Sefâretnâmeleri

Abstract

Livadya sefaretlerinin hangi senelerde gerçekleştiğini, muntazaman tespit edemiyoruz. Bununla birlikte, tespit edebildiğimiz ilk sefaretin 1863 ve diğerlerinin de 1867, 1879, 1886, 1887, 1891, 1898, 1900, 1903, 1911 ve 1914 senelerinde yapıldığını görüyoruz. Bu derece kesretine rağmen, Livadya sefâretlerinin her sene için tertip edildiğini söylemek, fazla iddialı olacaktır. Zira böyle bir iddiâ için, hem Rus çarlarının her sene muntazaman Kırım'a gelmeleri ve hem de Osmanlı Devleti'nin her defasında sefaret heyeti göndermesi gerekecektir. Bu yazımızda, önce, Livadya'ya giden Osmanlı sefirlerinin, İstanbul'a dönüşlerinde padişaha takdim ettikleri sefaretnâmelerinin müşterek yönlerini tespit ile, meseleyi izaha çalışacağız. Daha sonra, elimizde bulunan beş adet sefaretnâmenin metin ve klişelerini verecek, 1886 senesine ait sefaretnamede yer alan Livadya ile ilgili fotoğrafları da ilave edeceğiz.
