THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF F. BILGE KAZAZ, GRADUATE OF THE GAZIANTEP GIRLS’ INSTITUTE, TO THE CITY’S CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL IDENTITY

Abstract

Girls’ Institutes rank among the educational institutions that played a mediating role in the shaping of women’s education and identity in the Turkish Republic. The process, which began with the establishment of the İsmet Paşa Girls’ Institute in 1928, continued in the following years with the founding of numerous similar institutions across the country. Among these, the Gaziantep Girls’ Institute occupies a distinctive place as the first of its kind in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. During the years of its operation, the institute educated many students, one of the most prominent of whom was F. Bilge (Özgül) Kazaz, who emerged as a visible figure through her personality and activities.
The education Kazaz received at the Gaziantep Girls’ Institute shaped her life in multiple ways and played a pivotal role in determining her intellectual trajectory. As a direct outcome of this training, she integrated her pursuits in collecting and writing with the cultural fabric of Gaziantep. In her own words, she undertook these activities with the aim of “offering the past as a gift to the people of Gaziantep,” foregrounding the city’s social and cultural identity in her exhibitions and scholarly work. Furthermore, the documents pertaining to the years of the Gaziantep Girls’ Institute, presented here for the first time, constitute primary sources of considerable value for the institutional history of the school. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that Kazaz became a significant figure not only through her contributions to the legacy of the school from which she graduated, but also to the cultural and historical life of Gaziantep as a whole.

GAZİANTEP KIZ ENSTİTÜSÜ MEZUNU F. BİLGE KAZAZ’IN ŞEHİR KÜLTÜRÜ VE TARİHİNE KATKILARI

Abstract

Kız Enstitüleri, Türkiye’de kadın eğitiminin ve kadın kimliğinin şekillenmesinde aracı bir rol üstlenmiş eğitim kurumlarındandır. 1928’de İsmet Paşa Kız Enstitüsü’nün açılmasıyla başlayan süreç zaman içerisinde çok sayıda enstitünün kurulmasıyla devam etmiştir. Bunlardan biri de Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi’nde ilk olma özelliğine sahip bulunan Gaziantep Kız Enstitüsü’dür. Bu enstitü, faaliyette bulunduğu süre boyunca pek çok öğrenci yetiştirmiştir. F. Bilge (Özgül) Kazaz da şahsiyeti ve etkinlikleriyle o öğrenciler arasında en görünür simalardan biridir.
F. Bilge Kazaz’ın Gaziantep Kız Enstitüsü’nde almış olduğu eğitim hayatına çeşitli açılardan yön vermiş, adeta kilit rol oynamıştır. Kazaz, burada aldığı eğitimin bir getirisi olarak koleksiyonerlik ve yazarlık gibi kazanımlarını Gaziantep ile bütünleştirmiştir. Kendi ifadeleriyle “Gaziantep halkına geçmişini armağan etmek” amacıyla yaptığı çalışmalarda ve düzenlediği sergilerde Gaziantep’in sosyal ve kültürel yapısını merkeze almıştır. Ayrıca bu araştırmada ilk defa ortaya koyulan Gaziantep Kız Enstitüsü yıllarına ait belgeler kurum tarihi açısından birincil kaynak olma niteliğini taşımaktadır. Bütün bu veriler birleştiğinde Kazaz hem mezun olduğu okulun hem de Gaziantep’in kültürüne ve tarihine katkılarıyla kent için önemli bir figür haline gelmiştir.
