‘Bihruz Bey Syndrome’ As A Deviance in Ottoman Modernization

Abstract

Modernization is one of the most important transformative
dynamics in Turkish history. There has been a modernizing endeavor for
two centuries in Turkish society. It is really hard to say that all sectors
of Turkish society perceive and embrace the modernization process in
the same manner. There emerged two basic types of modernization: Substantive
and formal. It is known that during early periods formal modernization
was prevailing. To criticize this type of modernization Turkish
literature developed the prototype character of ‘Bihruz Bey’. Scrutinizing
the character of Bihruz Bey is equivalent to scrutinize an important
aspect of Turkish modernization.

Osmanlı Modernleşmesinde Bir Sapma Olarak ‘Bihruz Bey Sendromu’

Abstract

Modernleşme, Türk tarihinin en önemli dönüştürücü dinamiklerinden
biridir. Türk toplumu yaklaşık iki yüzyıldır, modernleşme yönünde bir
gayret içindedir. Çeşitli boyutları olan modernleşmenin, toplumun bütün
kesimlerince aynı biçimde algılanıp, benimsendiğini söylemek güçtür. Modernleşme
gayretleri, şekilsel ve özsel olmak üzere iki biçimde ortaya
çıkmıştır. Özellikle ilk dönemlerde, şekilci batılılaşmaya daha yaygın bi-
çimde rastlandığı bilinmektedir. Şekilci batılılaşmayı eleştirmek için Türk
romanı ‘Bihruz Bey’ prototipini geliştirmiştir. Bihruz Bey tipini irdelemek,
Türk batılılaşmasının önemli bir yönünü irdelemekle eşdeğerdir.
