Comparative analysis of various antibacterial agents against microorganisms isolated from dental clinic
Abstract
The aim of this study is to characterize bacteria isolated from the dental clinic and to investigate the potential use of different antibacterial agents in combating these bacteria. In this study, bacteria were isolated from dental hospital equipment and surfaces. The VITEK 2 system was used to identify isolated bacteria. Antibiotic resistance profiles of these bacteria were determined by disc diffusion technique, and the effects of some antibacterial agents (thymol, thyme oil, zinc pyrithione, magnesium monoperoxyphthalate) against bacteria were evaluated by agar well diffusion technique. The 16 bacteria isolated from dental hospital were identified as Staphylococcus warneri, S. hominis, S. aureus, S. lentus, S. epidermidis, S. sciuri, Micrococcus sp., Budvicia aquatica, and Kocuria kristinae. As a result of the examination of the antibiotic resistance profiles of these bacteria, Imipenem/Cilastatin, Streptomycin and Ciprofloxacin antibiotics had higher inhibition properties compared to other antibiotics, but 35% of these bacteria were resistant to cefdinir. Furthermore, when compared to other tested antibacterial agents, it can be stated that zinc pyrithione has strong inhibition activity against all isolates even at low dosages (0.1%). The supplementing alternative disinfectants with zinc pyrithione could prove advantageous in combating these existing pathogens in dental hospitals.
