Comparative Map History and “the History of Cartography” Methodologies, Institutions, and Idealizations

Abstract

Matthew H. Edney eserine “tarihyazımı ne tarafsızdır ne de masumdur” sözüyle başlar. Tarihyazımının bir parçası olarak görülen kartografya tarihi de bu kapsamda değerlendirilir. Önde gelen harita tarihçileri (ö. 2006) Cornelis Koeman, (ö. 1977) Armando Cortesão, (ö. 1970) R. A. Skelton ve (ö. 1991) J. B. Harley bu sahada önemli projeler üreterek kartografya tarihinin bir disiplin olmasını sağlamakla kalmamış aynı zamanda ortak bir gaye peşinde buyurucu (prescriptive) bir çerçeve sunmuştur. Edney’e göre tek bir çalışma alanı yaratabilmek adına bu dört tarihçi de, erken dönem haritaların araştırmacılar tarafından nasıl incelendiğini önemli ölçüde yanlış anlamış ve yanlış temsil etmiştir. İkna edici bir şekilde tarihsel olgularla donatılan kartografya tarihi, insanları inandırmak üzere “icat” edilmiş olup; Baudrillard’ın tabiriyle değerlendirildiğinde ise simulacrum’dur (var olan bir şeyin varlığını değil, tersine, o şeyin aslında var olmadığını gizleyen bir imgedir).

Comparative Map History and “the History of Cartography” Methodologies, Institutions, and Idealizations

Abstract

Matthew H. Edney begins his work with the assertion that “historiography is neither neutral nor innocent.” The history of cartography, viewed as an integral part of historiography, is evaluated within this very context. Leading map historians such as Cornelis Koeman (d. 2006), Armando Cortesão (d. 1977), R. A. Skelton (d. 1970), and J. B. Harley (d. 1991) did not merely establish the history of cartography as a discipline by producing significant projects in this field; they also provided a prescriptive framework in pursuit of a common goal. According to Edney, in an effort to create a single field of study, all four historians significantly misunderstood and misrepresented how early maps were examined by researchers. The history of cartography, though persuasively furnished with historical facts, was "invented" to convince people; when evaluated through Baudrillard’s terminology, it is a simulacrum (an image that does not conceal the existence of something, but rather hides the fact that the thing itself does not actually exist).
