Science Education in an Innovative Learning Environment: The Transformation of Achievement and Attitude with Augmented Reality

Abstract

Augmented reality, which involves enriching real-world images with digital elements, has seen a rise in studies exploring its potential applications in educational settings in recent years. Although various studies on this topic exist in the literature, there are only a limited number of studies that cover the scope, sample, and variables addressed in this study. This study aims to examine the impact of augmented reality applications on science lessons. by students' academic achievement and attitudes towards the subject. The "Electric Circuits" unit in the 7th grade science curriculum was selected for this study. The study was conducted with 7th grade students attending a public middle school. A pre-test – post-test control group experimental design, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in this study. The "Electric Circuits" unit was taught to the AR group students using augmented reality applications, while the control group students were taught according to the existing teaching program in the curriculum developed by the ministry. The data obtained were analyzed using apropriate statistical software. At the end of the six-week study, It was concluded that using augmented reality applications in science lessons significantly improved students' academic performance (t=2,11; p<0,05) and attitudes towards the subject (t=2,36; p<0,05).
