Cyanotype Print at the Intersection of Photography and Textiles: Its Role in Tradition and the Future of Textile and Art

Abstract

Cyanotype printing, developed in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, is a technique of significant importance in the history of photography, enabling the creation of unique prints in deep blue tones through the use of light-sensitive iron salts. Initially employed for scientific documentation, cyanotype printing gradually emerged as a medium of artistic expression, establishing a lasting presence in the realms of photography and art from its historical origins to the present day. Beyond its traditional applications, cyanotype printing has been rediscovered by contemporary artists and designers, maintaining its relevance as both a tool for scientific documentation and a medium for artistic expression. This study examines the use of cyanotype printing within the art world, exploring its evolution into an aesthetic and expressive medium in both art and textile domains. It particularly highlights the artistic and scientific transformations of cyanotype printing and connects these to contemporary practices, showcasing its reinterpretation in the modern art landscape. Using literature review and visual analysis methods, the research delves into historical examples, contemporary applications, and cyanotype printing’s role in art and design. The findings demonstrate that cyanotype printing can be appreciated both as a historical legacy and as a modern form of expression. Ultimately, this study bridges photography and textile art, presenting cyanotype printing as a rich aesthetic and conceptual medium through illustrative examples.

Fotoğraf ve Tekstilin Kesişiminde Siyanotip (Cyanotype) Baskı: Gelenekten Geleceğe Tekstil ve Sanattaki Rolü

Abstract

Siyanotip-mavi baskı (Cyanotype), 1842 yılında Sir John Herschel tarafından geliştirilen ve fotoğraf tarihinde önemli bir yer tutan bir teknik olarak, ışığa duyarlı demir tuzları kullanılarak derin mavi tonlarda benzersiz baskılar elde etmeyi sağlayan bir baskı türüdür. İlk dönemlerinde bilimsel dokümantasyon amacıyla kullanılan siyanotip baskı, zamanla sanatsal bir ifade aracı olarak da kendini göstermiş ve tarihsel kökenlerinden günümüze kadar süregelen yolculuğunda, fotoğrafçılık ve sanat dünyasında kalıcı bir yer edinmiştir. Geleneksel uygulamalarının yanı sıra, günümüzde sanatçılar ve tasarımcılar tarafından yeniden keşfedilen siyanotip baskı, bilimsel dokümantasyon ve sanatsal ifade biçimi olarak varlığını sürdürmektedir. Bu çalışma, siyanotip baskı tekniğinin sanat dünyasındaki kullanımını inceleyerek, tekniğin sanat ve tekstil alanlarında estetik ve ifade aracı haline gelişini araştırmaktadır. Özellikle, siyanotip baskının sanatsal ve bilimsel alanlardaki evrimini, güncel uygulamalarla ilişkilendirerek, bu tekniğin modern sanat dünyasında yeniden yorumlanışını ortaya koymaktadır. Araştırmada literatür taraması ile elde edilen veriler görsel analiz yöntemleri kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Tarihsel örnekler, çağdaş uygulamalar, sanat ve tasarım dünyasındaki yeri kapsamlı bir şekilde ele alınmıştır. Bulgular, siyanotip baskının tarihsel miras ve modern bir ifade biçimi olarak değerlendirilebileceğini göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak, bu çalışma, fotoğrafçılık ve tekstil sanatı arasında bir köprü kurarak, siyanotip baskının estetik ve kavramsal açıdan zengin bir ifade aracı olarak kullanılabileceğini örneklerle sunmaktadır.
