Abstract

Wabi-Sabi is a concept in Japanese aesthetics that embraces imperfection, transience, and the beauty created by natural processes. This aesthetic, evident in handmade ceramics, reflects the unique aesthetic value of the materials used and the artist's individual touch, offering a unique form of artistic expression. This article examines the influence of Wabi-Sabi aesthetics on ceramic art and how it has been interpreted by contemporary artists. The study aims to reveal how the Wabi-Sabi approach, which offers an alternative to ideal forms and mass production, creates a unique field of expression in ceramic art by emphasizing individual creativity and naturalness. The study adopted an interpretative qualitative research design, and document analysis was used as the data collection technique. The analysis was carried out with a hermeneutic approach based on a thematic framework developed from Wabi-Sabi literature. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that criteria such as imperfection aesthetics, transience and temporality, and naturalness strongly reflect both the aesthetic and philosophical foundations of Wabi-Sabi in the selected works. The findings demonstrate that Wabi-Sabi offers not only an aesthetic understanding but also an existential perspective. This approach, which seeks meaning within imperfection, simplicity, and transience, invites people to live in harmony with the cyclicity of nature, contributing to the development of a deeper awareness not only in ceramic art but also in daily life and other areas of art.

Wabi-Sabi Estetiği Bağlamında Seramik Sanatında Güzellik Anlayışı

Year 2026, Volume: 5 Issue: 1, 160 - 175, 01.02.2026
