Çağdaş Sanatta Sıhhi Tesisat Seramiklerinin Kullanımına Yönelik Tematik Yaklaşımların Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Bu araştırma, sıhhi tesisat seramiklerinin, işlevsel rollerini aşarak, çağdaş sanatta nasıl bir ifade aracına dönüştüğünü incelemektedir. Duchamp’ın hazır nesne yaklaşımıyla sanat tarihine giren bu ürün grubunun, sonraki dönemde çağdaş sanatçılar tarafından çeşitli teknik, tematik ve kavramsal yaklaşımlarla ele alındığı vurgulanmaktadır. Araştırmanın amacı, sıhhi tesisat seramiklerini eserlerinde kullanan çağdaş sanatçıların yaklaşımlarını analiz etmek ve belirli temalar altında sınıflandırarak karşılaştırmalı bir değerlendirme sunmaktır. Kapsam, amaçlı örneklemle seçilen uluslararası çağdaş sanatçılar Vilma Villaverde, Ann Agee, John De Fazio, Beril Anılanmert, Mehmet Kutlu, Philippe Droguet ve Urs Fischer’in sıhhi tesisat seramiklerini kullandıkları temsili eserleriyle sınırlıdır. Yöntem olarak nitel araştırma ve betimsel yaklaşım benimsenmiş; veriler doküman incelemesiyle toplanmış, tematik ve içerik analiziyle öz ve malzeme ilişkisi odağında çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular, bu nesnelerin kullanımının hazır nesnenin yeniden yorumlanması, beden/mahremiyet/cinsiyet temsilleri, kitsch/pop/tüketim eleştirisi, malzemenin dönüşümü, kültürel/evrensel temalar olmak üzere beş ana yaklaşım etrafında çeşitlendiğini göstermiştir. Sonuç olarak, sıhhi tesisat seramiklerinin çağdaş sanatta tek boyutlu bir malzeme olmadığı, aksine sanatçılara geniş bir yelpazede eleştirel ve kavramsal araştırmalar yapma imkânı sunan çok yönlü bir araç olduğu görülmektedir. Bu nesnelerin sanatsal potansiyeli, genellikle sıradan işlevleriyle sanatçının onlara yüklediği karmaşık anlamlar arasındaki gerilimden kaynaklanmaktadır. Çalışma bu malzeme grubunun önemini vurgulamakta, özellikle alandaki sistematik ve karşılaştırmalı incelemelerin eksikliğini gidererek literatüre katkı sağlamayı hedeflemektedir.

An Evaluation of Thematic Approaches to the Use of Ceramic Sanitary Ware in Contemporary Art

Abstract

This research examines how sanitary ceramics, transcending their functional roles, have been transformed into a medium of expression within contemporary art. It is highlighted that this product group, initially introduced into art history through Duchamp’s ready-made approach, has subsequently been addressed by contemporary artists employing considerably more diverse technical, thematic, and conceptual methodologies. The objective of this research is to analyze the approaches of contemporary artists who incorporate sanitary ceramics into their works and to provide a comparative evaluation by classifying these approaches under specific themes. The scope is delimited to representative works utilizing sanitary ceramics by international contemporary artists selected through purposive sampling: Vilma Villaverde, Ann Agee, John De Fazio, Beril Anılanmert, Mehmet Kutlu, Philippe Droguet, and Urs Fischer. Adopting a qualitative research methodology and a descriptive approach, the study collected data via document analysis. This data was subsequently analyzed through thematic and content analysis, focusing specifically on the relationship between essence and material. The findings indicate that the utilization of these objects is diversified across five principal themes: the reinterpretation of the ready-made, representations of the body, privacy, and gender, critique of kitsch, pop culture, and consumerism, the transformation of the material itself, and engagement with cultural/universal themes. Consequently, it is argued that sanitary ceramics are not unidimensional materials within contemporary art. Instead, they serve as versatile tools that afford artists opportunities for a broad spectrum of critical and conceptual explorations. The artistic potential inherent in these objects often originates from the tension between their commonplace functional origins and the complex meanings imputed to them by the artist. This study seeks to contribute to the existing literature by underscoring the significance of this material group and, notably, by addressing the paucity of systematic and comparative analyses within the field.
